 The Oreo Cookie Debate

An American classic makes the health Nazis' "10 most wanted" list…

Maybe there's something in the water out there in the People's Republic of California. Or maybe it's living with the constant threat of mass annihilation at the whims of geology that drives them all loopy (Daily Dose and Real Health readers excepted, of course). Maybe it's all that second-hand pot smoke. But whatever it is, something's rotten in Burbank…

Case in point: Where else could a lawsuit over Oreo cookies be taken seriously?

Yep, you read that right. Some left-coast loony-tune (an attorney, no less - how convenient!) is suing Kraft foods over the nearly century-old chocolate and cream-filled treat that so many of us grew up on. Why? Because they contain unhealthy trans-fats like hydrogenated vegetable oil - which he claims he didn't know were bad for him. Sounds to me like he's looking for someone else to blame for his own lack of willpower…

What did he think, that Oreos were health food? And why pick on America's favorite cookie, anyway? Foods with a high trans-fat content are everywhere. In fact, margarine - which was for years touted as a HEALTHY substitute for butter - is almost pure trans-fat. So why sue Oreos? It's because they're an American classic, that's why. The health Nazis will get more press by attacking them over, say, Land-O-Lakes.

Don't get me wrong - I'll be the first to condemn trans-fats as a major no-no for anyone worried about heart disease, diabetes or obesity. But even if you weren't aware of the dangers of trans-fats and other junk food ingredients, you'd have to have a single-digit IQ to believe that Oreo cookies are actually GOOD for you…

In other words, people know cookies are fattening, but eat them anyway. They weigh the risks, then take their chances. It's a little thing called "personal accountability," and it's at the very heart of what makes us free - what makes us American. But it's what left-coast liberals want to legislate out of existence! Anywhere else in the country, this stunt gets laughed out of court - yet under the warped California state codes, the suit may actually find its way in front of a judge. And if it WINS…

Oreos (in California, anyway) may one day be made from tofu - and it'll only be legal to dip them in soy "milk"!
Sounds yummy, huh?
